Review: AFI - Crash Love

I'll make this one quick and to the point to avoid getting too tedious and repetitive.

AFI is an amazing band, and an even better live band. Their older punk stuff is pure energy and embodies everything about punk music, and their newer, more streamlined alt-punk jams are just as good. AFI has been getting better and better since their major label debut, "Sing the Sorrow". It was followed up by "decemberunderground", which added more hooks and a bigger sound. Now with "Crash Love", AFI have continued to define their songwriting and sound with an album chock-full of huge songs about love and failing relationships.

Songs like "Veronica Sawyer Smokes" and "Too Shy to Scream" both show AFI expanding to different styles, while "Medicate" and "End Transmission" are pretty much vintage AFI. The entire album is one streamlined rocker after another, and doesn't let up. "Crash Love" is AFI branching out a little, but not too much; all the songs are tailor-made for arenas and Davey Havok's lyrics are still as cryptic and dark as ever. So is it better than "Sing the Sorrow"? Maybe not, but it's still an excellent record that deserves more than one listen.
