[Movies] Review - Moon

"Moon" was a movie that I really wanted to see when it came out in theaters. Problem was it was only in limited release, so I never got to see it. It wasn't until recently that I finally got a chance to check it out and I have to say that it completely and utterly blew away my expectations.

"Moon" stars Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey (as the robot GERTY) and is directed by Duncan Jones (aka David Bowie's son). It is the distant future and Sam Bell is living on a base on the Moon, employed by Lunar Industries, a huge corporation that solved the world's energy crisis but mining the Moon's resources. Sam is under a 3-year contract with Lunar Industries and is just finishing up his tenure. His only friend is GERTY, a robotic helper who's only job is to keep Sam company. Sam's only contact with the outside world are relayed video messages with his wife and young daughter. But two weeks before he is set to go home, Sam is confronted with a strange and shocking turn of events that reveals his true purpose on the Moon.

I could go on and reveal everything, but that would do a disservice to you and the movie itself. The twists are really cool and inventive and really took me by surprise (and by surprise I mean it totally was the opposite that I expected). Sam Rockwell is exceptional as always, and Kevin Spacey is great as the voice of GERTY. First-time director Duncan Jones shows true promise as the pacing is great and the tension is high.

"Moon" is a movie that seems small (in terms of budget and cast) but is really huge in ambition and scope, and it delivers. You simply have to experience this movie to believe it.
