[Movies] Congrats to District 9 (and other Oscar Stuff)

The Oscar nominations were announced a few days ago, and I was completely surprised and extremely excited to see that my favorite movie of 2009, District 9, was nominated for 4 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Even though I felt District 9 was just as good as any other typical Oscar movie, I thought that since it was a science fiction film and was made for such a small budget the Academy would pass it over, but thankfully I was wrong. However, this thanks in most part to the fact that the Oscars have increased the number of nominations for Best Picture to 10 this year. Also, it has no real chance at winning.

Despite that, I am really excited for the film and all who worked on it and really glad that this film is getting the recognition it deserves.

Continuing with my Oscar talk, here are my predictions for who I think will win, along with who I think should win. (You can also click on the movie titles to go to their Metacritic pages)

Best Picture
Who Will Win: The Hurt Locker
Who I think Should Win: District 9 or The Hurt Locker
(this is tough since I think both are equally as deserving, as are a few others in this category)

Best Actor:
Who Will Win: Jeff Bridges - Crazy Heart
Who Should Win: Jeremy Renner - The Hurt Locker

Best Actress:
Who Will and Should Win: Sandra Bullock - The Blind Side

Best Supporting Actor:
Who Will and Should Win: Christolph Waltz - Inglourious Basterds

Best Director:
Who Will and Should Win: Kathryn Bigelow - The Hurt Locker

There are, of course, other awards but to save time I'll just skip them for now. The Oscars air March 7th and I should have a follow-up depending on the outcome and how much free time I have. Until then, make sure you check out all the great movies nominated, since there are some really good ones this year.
