[Movies] The Hurt Locker Wins!

For the first time in a long time, I feel like the Oscars got it right. My second favorite film of the year (just behind District 9 who was also nominated for Best Picture but had no chance of winning), which was The Hurt Locker, won 6 Academy Awards, including Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture.

Kathryn Bigelow made history as the first woman to win the Best Director Oscar, and it was extremely well deserved. She made an extremely powerful film and crafted some extremely believable and three-dimensional characters.

As far as the other awards, I am glad to see Christolph Waltz win Best Supporting Actor (though he was a shoo-in). And I was also glad to see Sandra Bullock win for Best Actress, even though I haven't seen The Blind Side. As far as Best Actor goes, while I am really happy that Jeff Bridges won (as he really deserved an Oscar) I would have loved to have seen Jeremy Renner win as I felt he did a fantastic job in The Hurt Locker.

But of all the awards, I went crazy when The Hurt Locker was announced as the winner of Best Picture over Avatar. Nothing against Avatar, but The Hurt Locker was unlike any other film I saw all year, and for a film about the Iraq War to win an Oscar in a town that usually looks down upon anything remotely dealing with the US Military is truly amazing.

So yeah, the Oscars this year were probably the best in a while (thanks in most part to Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin). Who knows, maybe something lime Iron Man 2 will win Best Picture (yeah right).
