In case you didn't know, Them Crooked Vultures is a supernova of a supergroup that features Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal, Desert Sessions) on vocals and guitar, Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana) on drums, and the legendary John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) on bass and keyboards. Based on that, it should be easy to determine just how Them Crooked Vultures sound, which is the exact sum of their parts. Each musician takes the sounds they established in their respective bands and mash them together here into one massive mountain of sonic goodness. Them Crooked Vultures' self-titled debut is pure rock, and it doesn't let up until the very end.
This record sounds best when blaring from giant speakers. It's just made to be played loud. It represents the very essence of what rock and roll should be while also adding some fresh new ideas. Josh Homme's vocals are great (as they seem to get better which each album he makes) and his guitar is as crunchy as ever. JPJ's bass is just as sexy as anything he did while in Led Zeppelin. Dave Grohl's pounding drums never slow down and add an extra punch to the already punchy sound. As for the songs themselves, tracks like "Elephant", "No One Loves Me and Neither Do I" and "Scumbag Blues" sound humungous and have strong lyrics. "Interlude With Ludes" slows things down a bit, but the final stretch of songs (particularly "Gunman") pick up the pace again and end with a bang.
So yeah, believe the hype. This is a monster of an album. I just wish that they decide to record some more jams soon and aren't just a one-off. Songs like these just don't come around everyday.
