Top Five Albums of 2009: #5

Since the year is almost over, I thought I would make a list of my top five favorite albums from 2009. Over the next few days I'll reveal my list, starting now with #5:

Number 5:
Dashboard Confessional - Alter the Ending

Dashboard Confessional did two very good things on this record: they included an acoustic disc which featured stripped down versions of each song from the album, and more importantly, they made a tremendous leap in terms of sound. DC tried the huge rock sound before on 2006's "Dusk and Summer" and didn't fare too well. At first listen, I felt like this was just another failed attempt to make a U2-like album. But there is so much more there. "Alter the Ending" shows maturity and evolution without sounding like a sell-out. It does exactly what I expect from new albums: it takes the band's core formula, rearranges it a bit to help it sound fresh, but doesn't compromise it in any way and remains instantly recognizable. A must for any Dashboard fan (like me) or anyone who wants to see how mature emo music can get.

Definitely Download:
"Everybody Learns from Disaster", "Even Now", "Get Me Right"
