I am pretty much a loner when it comes to video games, since I really never play games online. I get tired of the idiots who cheat, talk trash, and generally make a game not fun for everyone. I experienced that with the Halo games and never really felt the urge to delve into the online gaming world again. That all changed when I heard about MAG, an exclusive for the PS3 (which don't come along all that often) that was online only and could contain up to 256 people in one battle. There was an open beta for the game a few weeks before it came out, but I never played it and dove head first into the game when it came out in stores. I had no idea how it would play or what each game type was like. I was completely unprepared for what would go on.
So here's a look at what went on when I played MAG:
Day One: January 26th 2009
I am kind of nervous putting the game in since I haven't played online in forever, but whatever. I have a headset but am not gonna use it since I don't wanna talk to anyone and don't wanna be yelled at when I fail miserably the first few games. Menus are weird. Don't know which faction to choose, all look kinda stupid. Picked Valor simply because it's supposed to be made up of Americans, and I wanna fight for the USA! Training comes first, which is nice, although it is kinda lame, just going over things I already know about FPS games. Now on to Suppression (aka Deathmatch). 64 people in one battle, Valor vs. Valor.
Spawn times to get into the game are ridiculous. 35 seconds? Game starts, off I go. Dead within the first few seconds, killed by my own teammate. WTF. I die like 20 times and have 3 kills. I have to get used to this.
Played a few more Suppression maps and got used to the science of the game. It's not like COD where you can just run up to people and shoot, it's slightly more realistic as to kill someone and stay alive you have to shoot from medium range. Stuck to assault weapons at first then trued out snipers and heavy. Sticking with assault from now on.
Moved from Suppression to Sabotage (kinda like CTF but you have to capture and defend objectives). 128 players at the same time. 32 one two teams trying to attack and defend objectives. First few games I played were against other factions, mostly against SVER. Lost the first three straight, as my team was attacking and SVER was defending. It seems like I should have chosen SVER as their weapons and maps are grossly overpowered and unfair. Finally get to play a map where my team is defending, and we won. It seems like it's nearly impossible to win while attacking.
At the end of the day I have a feel for how the game works, and I leveled up a bit, getting to level 8. Leveling up seems kind of easy at first, but I'm sure later it gets slower and more complicated.
Day Eight: February 3rd 2009
Starting to really get a hang of all this MAG business. Really has a flavor of uniqueness to the gameplay and I really like it. Problem is that since the game has been out for a week now, more and more people are starting to find little glitches and such so they can take advantage of the game itself and other players who are trying to play the game fairly. Played Sabotage a bit and I got killed every time I spawned because of some guy who camped in our spawn point. Finally someone killed him, but he kept coming back for more. Got a combat ribbon for dying over 30 times in one game; that happened because I would either get shot or magically commit suicide every time I parachuted into a level. Oh well, reached level 23 and have enough experience to start leading squads.
Day Fourteen: February 9th 2009
FUCK. Played with a bunch of idiots today that didn't do shit. I know I don't use a mic that often, but JESUS! Pay attention every now and then! When I put a FRAGO on a point, GO TO IT!
Day Seventeen: February 12th 2009
Had my first experience as a platoon leader today and accidentally murdered half of my squad with a cluster bomb. Oops.
Day Twenty: February 15th 2009
Reached level 38 today and am playing more and more Domination just to try and get the hang of it. Got my highest kill streak ever while defending on Domination (14 kills!) and was ranking up over 400 XP, but what happened? The damn server went down! Kissed my XP and sanity goodbye. Had to quit for a while but came back and got some of that XP back and even fixed up my loadout a bit.
Day Twenty-three: February 18th 2009
New update today! This would be great if the damn thing didn't fuck up the game! Every time I play Sabotage (which is the only game type on MAG I can play without getting yelled at by a ton of 12 year olds) I get through half the game and then suddenly all the sound goes out. The game finishes only to lock up, forcing me to manually shut off my PS3, which makes a truly awful sound when I do. Actually gave up on that and decided to play some Battlefield: Bad Company for the first time online. Here goes!
Day Twenty-four: February 19th 2009
Fuck Battlefield. I can't do shit in it. Back to MAG.
